What exactly are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are a collective term for various substances that help protect the body against so-called free radicals. These include vitamins, minerals, and naturally occurring plant compounds known as phytochemicals. The body also has its own protective systems, including certain enzymes, hormones, and metabolic by-products, which form part of its natural defense against oxidative processes.
