Astaxanthin capsules

Astaxanthin is one of the most powerful, currently known and very well researched, natural antioxidants. In contrast to other antioxidants, the red plant pigment is able to neutralise free radicals in the intercellular space, in the cell interior as well as in the cell wall.

 The substance belongs to the group of carotenoids, is of plant origin and is originally produced by the blood rain algae Haematococcus pluvialis. Curiously, the substance is even responsible for the red colouring of flamingos. They eat crayfish, which in turn eat algae containing astaxantine and thus take on the characteristic colour of the substance after some time.

Astaxanthin for the eyes

There are numerous studies that have investigated the effect of astaxanthin on macular degeneration and cataracts. Some studies have shown that astaxanthin can slow the progression of macular degeneration and improve vision. For example, a 2008 study published in the Journal of Nutrition showed that astaxanthin prevented the formation of drusen (a build-up of waste in the retina associated with macular degeneration) in rats and improved vision. The 2013 study, published in the journal Ophthalmology, showed that astaxanthin could improve vision in patients with age-related macular degeneration.

Another 2009 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed that astaxanthin could protect the cells of the lens from oxidative stress and reduce the development of cataracts.

Astaxanthin can neutralise free radicals, reducing the oxidative stress that can contribute to the development of macular degeneration and cataracts. It can also inhibit inflammation in the body, which can also play a role in the development of macular degeneration. In addition, astaxanthin can also improve blood flow and oxygen supply to the eye. It can protect the cells of the retina and lens and reduce damage to proteins and lipids in the retina as well as the lens.
